{"id":1612,"date":"2017-08-25T16:51:08","date_gmt":"2017-08-25T20:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.usmmasailingfoundation.org\/?p=1612"},"modified":"2017-08-25T16:51:08","modified_gmt":"2017-08-25T20:51:08","slug":"warrior-sailing-program-returns-second-year-annapolis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.usmmasailingfoundation.org\/index.php\/warrior-sailing-program-returns-second-year-annapolis\/","title":{"rendered":"Warrior Sailing Program Returns for Second Year in Annapolis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usmmasailingfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-25-at-4.32.43-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1615\" src=\"http:\/\/www.usmmasailingfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-25-at-4.32.43-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"682\" height=\"105\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Physically, Mentally Wounded Vets &amp; Active Duty Personnel Thrive in Program<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What exactly constitutes a disability?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of programs focus on combat wounded, but we don\u2019t take that stance,\u201d said Jen French, co-founder of the Warrior Sailing Program. \u201cIt could be a veteran who is a cancer survivor or blind due to a reaction from a vaccine or diabetes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Military veterans and active duty personnel who have been diagnosed with a disability are welcome to participate in the Warrior Sailing Program, an <a href=\"http:\/\/annapolisyc.com\">Annapolis Yacht Club<\/a>-sponsored Basic Training Camp taking place over three days from October 17-19, 2017, in the shadow of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Among the approximate 250 participants in the Warrior Sailing Program, about 75 percent suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or some type of brain injury, according to French. Participants range in age from 19 to 80, and French said she hopes to bring 21 program participants \u2014 seven teams each consisting of three sailors \u2014 to Annapolis for the sailing instruction and on-the-water Poker Run sailboat race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not just taking them for boat rides,\u201d French said. \u201cWe\u2019re teaching them the sport of sailing. By and large, they\u2019ve never been on a sailboat before. A lot (of the participants) are getting comfortable in their own skin while out on the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the on-the-water portion of the weekend is run by the WSP team, AYC\u2019s Race Committee runs the Poker Run, which wraps up the three-day program before the farewell dinner at the Clubhouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAYC greatly enjoyed our experience during the inaugural year of hosting the event at the Club,\u201d said Linda Ambrose, AYC Regatta Manager. \u201cWarrior Sailing has an incredibly well-organized group of staff members and volunteers who manage event logistics with support from AYC members and staff, so the Sailing Committee welcomed their request to return to Annapolis in 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/warriorsailing.org\">Warrior Sailing<\/a>, a program of the USMMA Sailing Foundation, stresses teamwork, self-reliance, and having fun on the water. And while the program highlights skills for participants to manage a boat on the water, another area that is stressed is societal skills, which may translate to personal and job skill development.<\/p>\n<p>There is no charge for program participants. All adapted equipment, expert coaches, and logistical support is provided by Warrior Sailing. The Basic Training Camp includes classroom and practical learning \u2014 including skills and safety \u2014 aboard J\/22s. \u201cSailing isn\u2019t just all racing,\u201d French said. \u201cWe try to open up their eyes to all aspects of the sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graduates from the Basic Training Camp will learn about local sailing opportunities and those in their hometowns. Select graduates will have unique opportunities to train for offshore passages or learn racing skills to compete in open and disabled racing events both across the country and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Locally, the Warrior Sailing Program is supported by AYC Foundation, S\/V Happy Together, Mission BBQ, Buddy\u2019s Crabs &amp; Ribs, Capriotti\u2019s Annapolis, Watermark Cruises, and Eastport Yacht Club.
